Local Survey
An important part of our primary research was creating a survey. The purpose of this survey was to get a better understanding of how different animal shelters in Indiana are currently handling animal transport, and how well these methods are working for them. The intended audience of this survey was different animal shelters in the state of Indiana. In order to distribute our survey, we sent out a mass email using the comprehensive shelter list and the contact information we had previously found. Given the results of this survey, our team was able to better make a recommendation to best suit the needs of Indyhumane and their new transport program.
Figure 1
During our survey we asked participants to name what method they use when figuring out which animals need transportation. The options were Petfinder, Phone, Email, Facebook, and other. 0 participants said they used Petfinder. 24% of participants communicated through phone, 48% used email, and 24% used Facebook. As Facebook and Email are two of the most widely used means of communications, it makes sense that we would recommend sending a mass email invite to a Facebook page to create a group of animal shelters who can post needs/availability for transporting animals.
Figure 2
In the survey we asked the respondents if they would be interested in being apart of a new transportation system that is linked with Indy Humane. 76% of the respondents said that that would be interested in being apart of this while the other 24% was not interested. Going forward with our research, we are able to reach out to the 76% and give them information that will connect them to Indy Humane.
Figure 3
In the chart above we can see that sixty-five percent of survey participants do not currently use a transport program to transport animals. From this information we can gather that Indyhumane has an great opportunity to connect with a large number of shelters who do not have a transport system. We can also see that thirty-four percent of survey participants do have a transport system in place.
Figure 4
As part of our project, we wanted to inquire regarding the way other shelters transported animals so we did, using our mass email and survey. In the survey, we asked, “What method do you use to create mapping routes when transporting animals?” This question helped us get an idea of how others were doing it so we could too explore efficient software such as Google Maps. As you can see, most people use Google Maps as a way to come up with efficient driving routes.
